Mother and Daughter Were Each Pierced by Kerri as Teens

When I think back over the years to all the amazing and unique people I have had the opportunity to meet and pierce it amazes me to be so lucky to meet so many different races, cultures, and backgrounds. One thing has stuck out through the years. People more times then not get piercings to symbolize something important to them in their life. This can range from the end of a tough semester at the U.C. This could also be a memorial for someone close to them that has passed on.

One of my favorite symbolic gestures that has only developed in Western culture over the last 20 years is the coming of age symbol of the Navel or Belly Button piercing.

Many times young girls celebrate their 14th or 15th birthday with a party but more often I see them coming in to Zebra to visit me to obtain their symbol of young adulthood. What warms my heart more is when I have a young mother bringing in her teen for a piercing and the first words out of their mouth is "You pierces my (navel, nose, ear, etc.) however many years ago." This means I have been in the business long enough to see two and sometimes (I'm dating myself) three generations of family piercing. I am not only building trust among clients but entire families. I am now known in their household as "their piercer". What an amazing honor. To not only impact lives but leave a mark. I have the best job in the world!
